Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? By Paul Gauguin - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting On Canvas
"Where Do We Come From? What are We? Where Are We Going?" These words are inscribed by Paul Gauguin in this painting. Gauguin suggested that the painting must be read and interpreted from right to left. All the three questions posed are each illustrated: one part each. The first group represents the beginning of life (three women with a child). The second (middle) group symbolises the daily existence of adulthood. Lastly, the third group represents death approaching. The whole thing is wrapped up by the blue idol standing in the background, which, according to the artist himself, is the Great Beyond.
