Francisco Goya did several paintings of historical uprisings in Spain. “The Second of May 1808” is a companion to a related painting The Third of May 1808. This particular painting depicts a scene that occurred in Calle de Alcala in Madrid, during what was dubbed as the Dos de Mayo Uprising. In the said uprising, many people rebelled against the French occupation, which eventually sparked the Peninsular War. This painting is also known as The Charge of the Mamelukes.
