The Last Day of Pompeii is a historical painting by the Russian painter Karl Bryullov. This large-scale artwork, painted from 1830 to 1833, depicts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The people of Pompeii are in despair and in panic. Some are hugging each other in fear of the eruption. Their bodies are classically modelled, making the painting something that is a blend of Neoclassicism and Romanticism. A light shines upon some of the people, while others are in the shadows. The fiery volcano is erupting in the background, lending a hellish effect to the painting.
