Edward Burne-Jones was an English Pre-Raphaelite artist. One of his best-known paintings is "The Golden Stairs," a classical picture of a group of women, each carrying a musical instrument, descending a spiralling staircase. Unlike the artist's other works, this one is not based on a literary story. With no clear narrative, the painting was done in the tradition of aesthetics of the 1860s and 1870s. The women here are dressed in classically-inspired robes, in tones of white with silver and gold accents, making it a very Pre-Raphaelite work of art. There is a sense of harmony and musicality to the work, the kind of painting one will never get tired of looking at.
