Ford Madox Brown made two versions of "The Coat of Many Colours." One is watercolour, and the other on canvas. Featured here is the latter, which is more detailed, with more vivid colours, more emphasis on light and shadow, on depth. The painting is an artistic portrayal of the biblical story of Joseph and his brothers. The painting depicts the part of the Old Testament story where Joseph's brothers are convincing their father that Joseph had been killed, as evidenced by the blood-stained coat (the coat of many colours). But Joseph was not dead. They just did this because they were jealous of him, being the favourite son of their father.
