Frederick Carl Frieseke was an American painter who spent most of his artistic life in France. He was associated with the Impressionist movement and was known for his depictions of women. "La Poudreuse" is one of such paintings, featuring a woman selecting a necklace from a box. of jewellery. A mirror and a hairbrush are also inside the box. She's wearing a kimono and her hair is done like that of Japanese women. The wallpaper in the background is floral, rendered in the style of Japanese prints. It's definitely an example of Japonism, a movement in European art which borrowed aesthetics from Japanese art and culture.
