Of the many Moulin Rouge paintings, the artist picked this as his personal favourite and best. “La Goulue Entering the Moulin Rouge” features Louise Weber, a Montmartre cabaret who was known by her nickname, “the glutton.” She is a star performer known for her appetite. This painting is characterized by form-flattening line, bold cropping and shallow spaces, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, a technique earlier adapted by Edgar Degas, which Toulouse-Lautrec also employed in this work.
