Artemisia Gentileschi was a feminist long before the movement started. She was definitely ahead of her time, as an artist and as a person. This Italian baroque artist was famous for her gory paintings depicting women empowerment and revenge. Her painting Judith and Her Maidservant depicts a scene from the Book of Judith, where Judith murders the general Holofernes after seducing him. In the painting, the severed head of Holofernes is being placed by the maidservant in a bag while Judith makes sure that nobody else is around.
