Hendrick ter Brugghen was considered as the most loyal follower of Caravaggio. He is most known for his painting, Esau Selling His Birthright, completed when he moved to Utrecht. This painting depicts a scene in the Genesis just after Esau sold his birthright. Here, Jacob is standing looking and talking at his twin brother, Jacob, who is holding a bowl of lentils. Between them, on the table, is a candle, which illuminates both of their faces, rendering a powerful play of light and shadow. Behind the two figures is their ageing mother, who is holding a plate.
