Martin Johnson Heade was an American painter known for his seascapes and salt marsh landscapes. This Approaching Thunder Storm painting was his largest work as of 1859 and is often considered as one of his best paintings. It features a man on a shore looking straight ahead into the approaching thunderstorm. It is best known for its dramatic depiction of an approaching storm: the eerily illuminated terrain in the foreground and sail peacefully sailing not too far away, as though unaware of the coming darkness.
