It depicts a grieving family. The body of a drowned mariner lies at the centre. On his feet and head are men and women who are grieving in silence. There are three wailing women at his side, who are placed at the centre of the painting, just behind the dead body. The placement of the figures is a religious allusion of the death of Christ, which is just as tragic as the death of this unnamed drowned man.
