Marie Bashkirtseff was a chronicler of urban life through her canvas. In "The Meeting," she captured a scene in a poor suburb of the city and did so with great precision and attention to detail. Here, six boys from working-class families gather around an unidentified object. By the looks on their face and their gesture, they seem to be plotting something, a childish plot so to speak. The artist did not insert any social undertones but merely depicted the kids as they are against the backdrop of a wooden fence, graffiti and torn posters.
