Giuseppe Arcimboldo was known for putting together different objects, like fruits and vegetables, to create an image, usually a portrait. In this painting, "The Librarian," he put together various books to create a portrait of a librarian. That's literally assembling books to represent the person; and what better way to paint a picture of a librarian than to use books. But the "literal" take on the portrayal is actually a commentary, a parody of people who are more interested in collecting and acquiring books than actually reading them.
