Jean-Francois Millet was a chronicler of the plight of the farmers and the rural workers of France. He portrayed peasants at work, highlighting their working and social conditions. The setting is mostly Chailly, the breadbasket for much of the country. "Harvesters Resting" was initially conceived as the biblical story of Ruth, who supported herself by gathering what was left of the harvest. However, the artist changed the title of the work to better reflect the contemporary stories of farmers, gleaners and ordinary workers of his time, at a time when rural farmlands are increasingly owned by absentee and unemphatic rich landlords. This painting is a beautiful artistic gem with a poignant story to tell.
