In 1870 to 1876, the American realist painter Thomas Eakins painted a series of intimate portraits, the subject of which are his family and friends. "Baby at Play" was the last painting of the celebrated series. The subject of this painting is the artist's niece, Ella Crowell, who at that time was two-and-a-half years old. Soberly absorbed at play, the child here looks curious and intent, learning new skills by building toy blocks outdoors. She is beautifully dressed in an embroidered white frock, and is lighted by sunlight, which makes her brighter than the brick floor and the dark line of greens in the background.
