Monet was known for painting similar subjects, sometimes in different moods and seasons or from different angles, within a particular period. He made ten paintings of weeping willows after World War I. This was his response to the emptiness that the war has caused in their household. The weeping willows found in the artist's property became symbols of solitude, of the abandoned, wild and rough. This "Weeping Willow" is painted in shades of green and brown, rendered in rough and thick brushstrokes.
