Travellers amongst mountains and streams is a painting by Fan Kuan. This is a classical example of a Northern Song Dynasty monumental landscape painting. Running along the central axis of the painting is a mountain which dominates the scene. The rooftops of a buildings stand out the middle ground. Near to the cluster of rocks in the foreground is a path on which mules make their way. Kuan has painted the mountains and slopes with jagged outline strokes and filled them with brush dabs. He used these techniques to highlight the monumental and eternal features of the mountains. The painting highlights the insignificance of humans beings, compared to Nature.
