Picture of the Year by Zhao Chang - Chinese Paintings - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Zhao Chang was a Chinese painter during the Song dynasty. In "Picture of the New Year" he used a painting method which he called sketching from life. He went out every morning in the dew to capture elements of scenery that would feature this work. In this painting Chang uses an arrangement of many motifs in an accomplished but complex composition that intentionally does not seek to express scenery as it appears in nature. We see an assortment flower bulbs and peonies growing in the soil a the lower part of the painting, with budding branches and brighly coloured red and white flowers in the top section of the painting. In the centre of the image is a brown structure set against a blue background.
