Empress Xiaoxian By Ignatius Sichelbarth and Yi Lantai - Chinese paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
This is a painting of Empress Xiaoxian from the 1700 era by famous painters Ignatius Sichelbarth and Yi Lantai. When an empress or any rank of consort was chosen to enter the palace, she pledged a total allegiance to the imperial family and cut ties to her natal family. Whether as the emperor’s mother or as his wife, an empress was honored as the “mother of the state” and served as a role model for women throughout the empire. The Empress Xiaoxian is elegantly dressed in an regal blue gown adorned with golden dragons and other mythological creatures. She also wears a regal headdress. She is portrayed standing and facing the viewer which was the typical portraiture style of Qianlong court taste.
