Guo Xu was a proficient painter of figures and landscapes. His figure paintings reveal two very different styles. One is refined and elegant; the other is bold and spontaneous. This painting of the "Drunken Immortal" is in the latter style. It shows a drunken immortal in a white robe ad black cap, who staggers home supported by a ghoulish, boney figure who is wearing a loin cloth. Paintings of immortal and demon helpers, were common themes at the time, with their stories situated in folk lore or Daoist religous lore.
