George Barbier may be known for his gift in depicting high fashion and Parisian life in his art. But he also infuses great subjects and themes in his works. “L’aveu Difficile” is an intriguing, dramatic and evocative illustration of two women, who are both fashionably dressed. One is standing, looking away as though to hide away her tears and emotion. The other one is on her knees, holding the standing woman’s hands. It has a lesbian tone in it, though what the two are talking or dramatic about is quite unclear. What is clear though is Barbier’s talent in telling stories through his works.
