Young Omahaw, War Eagle, Little Missouri, and Pawnees 1821 By Charles Bird King - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Charles Birg King specialised in portraiture and painted more than a hundred portraits of Indian delegates, representing at least twenty tribes, who traveled to Washington, between 1821-1842, to meet with the president to negotiate their territorial rights with the government. This 1821 painting portrays three dignified Plains Indian Chiefs: Young Omahaw, War Eagle, Little Missouri, together with two Pawnees. The artist painted the chiefs with a war axe, blood-red face paint, and eagle feathers on their heads. War Eagle wears a presidential peace medal, valued by Native Americans as a sign of status and worn on all formal occasions.
