Who Is Sylvia? What Is She, That All the Swains Commend Her? 1896 by Edwin Austin Abbey - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $349.00

‘Sylvia’ belongs to a collection of seven large oil paintings which depict various Shakespearean comedy themes. The artist, Edwin Abbey, drew inspiration for ‘Sylvia’ from ‘Two Gentlemen from Verona’, taken from the serenade verse in Act IV, Scene 2: "Who is Sylvia? what is she? That all our swains commend her? ...". The character Proteus, who is infatuated with Sylvia, the beautiful daughter of the Duke of Milan, hires musicians to serenade her. Proteus, in his pursuit of Sylvia has dumped his lover Julia and betrayed his best friend Valentine, who is Sylvia's real love. In this painting, Sylvia, dressed in a beautiful red sleeved, white gown, walks serenely past her admirers, one of whom looks lovesick, as he leans against a pillar. In the background we see the hired musicians.
