U.S. Thread Company Mills, Willimantic, Connecticut, 1893 by Justin Alden Weir - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
This painting titled ‘U.S. Thread Company Mills, Willimantic, Connecticut’ is by the American Impressionist artist, Julian Alden Weir. Willimantic was a region famous for its’ cotton spool thread factories. The artist found the grey, granite factory buildings clustered together in natural landscapes to be a subject worthy of aesthetic consideration and painted them many times, from varied vantage points. In this composition, the bridge dominates the foreground, entering diagonally from the right, and the trees stretch from the foreground to the top edge of the canvas. The work is painted in broken brushwork with the sun-saturated colors of impressionism.
