The family and a servant sit and stand around a table spread with papers and a map. George Washington's uniform, sword and the papers under his hand allude to his military character and Presidentship. With a map before her, Martha Washington points with her fan to a spot on the map. The boy wears a dusky rose pink suit with a white lacy collar. His hand rests on a globe on a wooden stand. The young girl, wearing a white dress with a green sash stands on the far side of the table holding the curling edges of the map. The servant, dressed in livery, stands in the shadows.
