John Mix Stanley was known for his painting which depicted American Indians who hunted and gathered and lived in traditional tribal settings as well as cowboys and mountain men and trappers who lived in white settlements on the frontier. This painting shows the interior of a trappers cabin where we see a trapper with two crouched men; they are negotiating over the contents of the days catch. Lying on the ground are a collection of dead birds and a deer. Alongside the trapper is a hunting dog.
