The Power of Music 1847 By William Sidney Mount - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Narrative painting, which offered a readable story, became immensely popular in the pre-civil war era. William Sidney Mount, one of the leading painters of such works, completed 'The Power of Music' in 1847. This detailed painting presents an African American labourer standing outside a barn listening intently to a fiddle tune enjoyed by white men. While a love of music unites the group of men in a bond of shared humanity, the two races occupy different spaces - one inside, one outside. The barn door which separates them is symbolic of the racial divisions in America at the time. William Sidney Mount included the theme of music in many of his paintings. You can see from the expressions on the listeners' faces that they are moved by the sounds they are hearing.
