Jonathan Eastman Johnson was an American painter and co-founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He was best known for his genre paintings of scenes from everyday life and portraits of everyday people. This painting, titled 'The Pets' is a commissioned portrait. We see a young girl who is serenely seated at the edge of her chair, admiring at the menagerie of pets before her. We see a cat intently watching the fish swimming in a bowl; a brightly colour parrot on a perch and two caged guinea pigs. There is an empty saucer on the carpet. The light streaming through the nearby window draws attention to the pets, positioned on the nearby table, and illuminates the the front of the girls white dress. There is an overall mood of calmness and introspection.
