Albet Bierstadt’s “The Last of the Buffalo” is considered as the artist’s final Western painting. This landscape painting symbolically depicted the vanishing of the wildlife from the wilderness: represented by the bleached skulls and the bleeding buffalo in the foreground. Representing the Great Plains, the painting features a dry meadow, a wide river, and beyond are the hills, prairies, mesas, and distant mountains that repeat the shapes of the main figures. It’s a poignant lament at the dying great American landscape.
