“The Icebergs” is a landscape painting by the American artist Frederic Edwin Church. Painted in 1861, this oil painting was inspired by the artist’s voyage to the Newfoundland and Labrador in the North Atlantic. The painting looks splendid in its mastery of the play of light on ice. The painting depicts a few icebergs looking majestic in the afternoon Arctic light. The icebergs look so immaculate and pure in their whiteness. Because of the unconventional subject of ice, water and sky, the painting became one of Church’s “Great Pictures.”
