Inspired by the modern art ideas from Europe, American artists during the early 20th century began exploring new ideas and subjects in their art. Marsden Hartley was one of them. In his painting, “The Ice Hole,” Hartley painted a new experimental winter landscape scene, taken from the remote rural parts of America, one that has never been painted before. This is among the large series of landscapes the artist made. Instead of realistically capturing the topography of The Ice Hole in Maine, the artist instead focused on the raw feeling of the landscape’s desolate terrain, wild and seemingly untouched.
