‘The House Maid’, 1910 by William McGregor Paxton portrays woman in a domestic scene, dressed in a housemaid’s uniform. The housemaid is engrossed in reading a book. She holds a feather duster under her arm and is standing behind a table on which a group of objects and ornaments are displayed. The still life objects include various Chinese ceramic works and an open stationery box. The muted palette and the overall composition and sense of quiet concentration are reminiscent of the work of Dutch master painters, such as Johannes Vermeer, who was famous for his paintings of domestic scenes with women.
