The Green Domino 1913 By Albert Bloch - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
'The Green Domino', painted in 1913 by American artist Albert Bloch, shows the artist's interest in the expressive powers of simple forms and intense colour. The curious figures who occupy this brightly coloured painting are based on characters from 16th and 17th century Italian improvisational comedic theatre. The standing figure in the centre of the painting looks directly out at the viewer. The figure's face is stark white, with red lips and large eyes rimmed in black. It is dressed in a bright green costume with blue cuffs. Four additional figures frame the central figure in green: one with a top hat and monocle; one masked; the third is a hunched back figure with a crooked nose who wears a mauve coat and white coned hat; the fourth, with it's back to viewer is a devil type figure dressed in red. The background of the painting is filled with abstract, multi-coloured chevron-shaped forms.
