The Ghost Story 1923 By Walter MacEwen - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Walter MacEwen was an internationally renowned American painter. For a period of his career he lived and worked in the Netherlands where he observed the local customs, scenery and costumes. The setting for this painting is a prosperous peasant's dwelling, where the women of the house have gathered in a spacious room to prepare food and to spin. The scene is set in front of a window. MacEwen shows the narration of a ghost story at it's most dramatic moment—all eyes are fixed on the animated storyteller who gesticulates with her hands. Work stops, the spinning wheels are idle, and the listeners all lean toward her in fascination. A little girl clutches her doll in fear.
