The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
The Death of General Wolf is an oil painting by the American artist Benjamin West. This 1770 painting commemorates the Battle of Quebec in 1759, where General James Wolfe died just as when they have claimed victory. While the battle only lasted for fifteen minutes, this victory is a pivotal event in the Seven Years’ War. It’s a tragic victory, nonetheless, with General Wolfe succumbed to the mortal wounds he sustained during the short battle. The painter chose to highlight this martyrdom by dressing several individuals in modern costumes and featuring some who were not there during the battle. By doing so, West broke a standard rule in historical portraiture, making this painting even more a masterpiece.
