The Biglin Brothers Racing 1872 by Thomas Eakins - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings

from $389.00

The Biglin Brothers Racing' was inspired by a specific event: the first pair-oared race in America. The long anticipated match took place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on the evening of 20 May 1872. The prize money was $1000. The Biglins brothers, portrayed in the painting, won the 5 mile race by twenty boat lengths. The details of Eakins painting closely parallel contemporary descriptions of the actual race that were published in sporting journals at the time. We see cheering crowds on the shore and crowded steamboats on the river. The brothers seated in the rowing boat are wearing blue pants, armless shirts, and blue silk handkerchiefs around their heads. The painting also shows the Biglin brothers leading the race against one other competitor.
