Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl by James Abbot McNeill Whistler - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
Originally called “The White Girl,” this painting was later referred to as the “Symphony in White No. 1.” By doing so, the artist makes an otherwise concrete subject of a woman in full figure into something quite abstract, emphasizing on his philosophy that is art is f or art’s sake. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood aesthetics, the painting features a woman in full view in front of a white curtain. She is wearing a white wolf skin and is holding a white lily in her hand. Using an almost entirely white colour scheme, the painting invokes a sense of innocence, purity and loss, with some critics calling it an allegory to the Virgin Mary.
