Street in Venice, 1882 by John Singer Sargent - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
Street in Venice' was painted in 1882 during Sargent's extended visit to Venice. The artist captured a transitional moment when his model Gigia Viani is being observed by one of two men who stand talking near a stone doorway, as she briskly walks down a Venetian street. Gigia has her eyes half-closed and appears self-absorbed and aloof. She is unaware that she is being watched. She holds a black shawl around her shoulders for warmth. Both bearded men wear low brimmed hats and fur lined cloaks. Their nonchalant attitude and the relaxed appearance of other people in the painting suggest that this incident takes place during afternoon siesta. The mood of the painting is introspective.
