Shooting for the Beef 1850 By George Caleb Bingham - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
"Shooting for Beef' by George Caleb Bingham is a painting with a lively narrative. Frontier men and their dogs gather around to compete in a shooting contest which was a typical western pastime. The prize is a large steer which we see on the left of the painting near the house. The target is a nail on the board leaning against the dead tree. A sign above reads “To Boonsborough 14 miles.” In the distance is a far ranging view of the western landscape.
