Provincetown Fisherman 1915 By Charles W. Hawthorne - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Charles Hawthorne grew up in Maine among seafaring people who were to become his major subjects. In his painting 'Provincetown Fisherman' 1915, Hawthorne portrays a rugged Portuguese fisherman who was a resident of the Cape Cod village. The fisherman is shown frontally and makes direct eye contact with the viewer. Alongside him are other working fishermen - a man with a bucket of fish on his shoulder and a young boy. Critics admired Hawthorne’s ability to convey a “sympathetic insight into character". The paintings stately composition and solid, weighty forms give the subject a dignity and grandeur not often associated with the fish market. The green toned palette evokes the sea and by contrast emphasize the bloody fish in the foreground of the painting.
