John James Audubon (1785—1851) is America’s most revered artist-naturalist and is renowned for his ambitious undertaking to record the birds of America. Combining his interests in art and nature, Audubon sought to depict every species of native North American birds which he painted "in action" with elements of their habitats. This painting shows two peregrine falcons resting on a rock, feasting on two fresh duck carcasses. Blood drips from their beaks and talons. Feathers float in the air.
