At the turn of the century it was frequented by many artists: its colonial houses, well-worn boat sheds, and busy docks provided ample subject matter in congenial surroundings. The Oyster industry was also thriving at the time. This image depicts an oyster sloop and fishing boat in the foreground with shipping yard and shipping sheds to the rear. Oyster Sloop, Cos Cob is a typical Hassam painting in several respects. It shares the bright, shadowless atmosphere, high horizon and summer palette and cursory brush strokes of many of his mature works.
