Nonchaloir (Repose), 1911 by John Singer Sargent - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas - American Paintings
The woman represented in the painting is Rosa-Marie Ormond, the artist's niece, companion, and model. She appears in eight of his oil paintings and in numerous watercolors. In the painting we see a room interior – the figure of a young woman reclining on a couch, beneath a voluminous robe; there is a gilt frame above her head and a tabletop to the left. The title 'Nonchaloir' is a French word that means carelessness, negligence, and inaction. The colour palette of gold, white, pale green and white strikes a Neoclassical note.
