Emanuel Leutze was an American-German history painter. “Mrs. Schuyler Burning Her Wheat Fields on the Approach of the British” depicts Catherine Van Rensselaer Schuyler (1734-1803), wife of General Philip Schuyler, setting fire to her wheat fields near Albany, N.Y. as per General Schuyler's scorched-earth policy to keep the enemy from harvesting them. In the painting Mrs. Schuyler is the central figure dressed in a red, white, and blue gown. With her are two young girls, a servant and a dog. We see a messenger announcing the imminent arrival of the British. The paintings purpose was to portray the bravery of Mrs. Schuylers actions during the Revolutionary war, by setting the fire herself, and by passing on her husband's orders to his tenants.
