“Men of the Docks” is bleak and truthful. It does not sugar-coat the poor conditions of some people in Brooklyn. It does not romanticize poverty either. George Bellows simply captured the ugly truth, depicting a group of day labourers standing at a dock together with some draft horses, huddled together in the cold weather. A large steam liner looms in the background, with tugboat and ice floes floating on the winter waters in the background. In the distance, the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline looms. Everything looks bleak and forlorn.
