Robert Henri was an American painter and was a foremost figure of the Aschan School. In 1913, he made several trips to the western coast of Ireland. Since then, he would return every spring and summer to Dooagh, a village on Archill Island. During his stays there, he painted portraits of the villagers, particularly the children. These portraits were among the most important and sentimental aspect of his body of work. One of these portraits is this particular painting, “Mary Agnes,” featuring one of the children of Dooagh.
