John Singleton Copley was an American painter who was best known for his portraits during his stay in America. He moved to London in 1774, never to return, and continued his career there as a well-established painter. He made his own portrayal and interpretation of the story of “Mars, Venus and Vulcan.” As in the story of Ovid, what is portrayed in this painting is Vulcan discovering the affair of his wife Venus with Mars.
