In the Land of Promise Castle Garden 1884 By Charles Friederic Ulrich - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Charles Frederick Ulrich was an American artist, born in New York where he studied the methods used by artists during the Golden Age of Dutch painting. The theme of this painting is centred around Castle Garden which was the first U.S. immigration processing station (1855 -1890). U.S. immigration processing facilities later moved to Ellis Island. Central to the painting is a young family who are facing a new world. We see a young mother sitting on her trunk of worldly possessions. She breast feeds her baby as her daughter in the blue shawl looks out. In the background, we see a man smoking a pipe (perhaps a guard); also a man in a bowler hat tends his poorly wife. Cholera and smallpox were common in the crowded, noisy conditions of Castle Garden. The painting conveys the promise of hope.
