In the Laboratory c. 1885-87 By Henry Alexander - American paintings - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Henry Alexander was a American genre painter who worked in San Francisco and New York; he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The subject of this painting is Thomas Price (1837–1912) who was a chemist and a consultant to international mining companies. The interior setting is Price’s San Francisco laboratory. The "Portrait d’Apparat"—a painting in which a subject appears along with objects associated with their daily life (in this case chemistry) - reflects Alexander’s training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and showcases his skills as both a portraitist and as a still life painter.
