‘East Hampton Beach, Long Island’, 1874 depicts an isolated beach scene where we see a group of three well dressed women sitting closely together on a blanket they have placed on the golden sand. The umbrellas they hold protect them from the midday sun. The group is approached by fourth woman wearing a long white dress and red jacket. She lifts her skirt and holds her hat as she walks on the sand towards them. In the hazy distance we can see beach huts and other signs of activity such as figures strolling on the beach. Fishing boats can be seen cleaving through the sea waves, bending to the wind.
